Project Aware and what we are doing as a Dive Centre to support this movement

Project Aware Partner

2018 is a start of a new chapter for us at Divewise. This year we are all about saving our oceans and we have some amazing news! We´ve become a PADI 100% AWARE Partner, Adoped a Dive Site, Log rubbish for Dive Against Debris and have now implemented recycling measures to our Dive Centre!

Project AWARE is a global movement of scuba divers protecting our ocean planet – one dive at a time. Focused on the critical issues of Sharks in Peril and Marine Debris, Project AWARE empowers thousands of divers in more than 180 countries to work together for a clean, healthy and abundant ocean planet.

What does this mean?

Let´s start with explaining what AWARE stands for. It stands for Aquatic World Awareness Responsibility and Education. We feel it is imperative that people failiarise themselves with this term, because many people have heard about it, but do not know it´s purpose or aren´t really that knowledgeable about it.It was formed in the year of 1989 which has now become one of the biggest if not the biggest movement of scuba divers around the world.Their slogan is “Protecting Our Ocean Planet – One Dive at a Time”. They focus on the critical issues of Marine Debris. It is a non-profit organization which empowers thousands of divers all over the world, in 180 countries to dive together to help clean, protect, preserve our planet´s oceans.

What is Divewise doing to contribute towards this movement?

By joining Project Aware as one of its partners, we have become part of a growing number of other centres who are putting the preservation and protection of our oceans at the heart of our business. From the year of 2018 we will be making donations on behalf of our clients that go towards protecting our oceans which we love exploring so much. In return our clients will get a limited edition 100% Project Aware Card.

DIVEWISE is proud to Adopt a Dive Site with Project AWARE. Harnessing the unique underwater skill set of the scuba diving community, Adopt a Dive Site empowers dive leaders around the globe to engage in ongoing, local protection of our underwater playgrounds. As a Dive Centre we were always aware that our oceans need protecting, so improving the health of our ocean ecosystem through volunteering efforts when we can is no new concept to us…..

Dive Against Debris is a cause which is very dear to our hearts here at Divewise.

“We are extremely happy to become a part of this wonderful cause as a Dive Centre. We´ve always been conscious about protecting the precious waters around the Islands, and participated in Project AWARE activities, like hosting clean-ups, we just made it official. We´ve also Adopted a Dive Site! Proud is an understatement when we have now joined Project AWARE´s mission to create a global force of divers to protect our oceans. Divewise has always done it´s utmost in every aspect and this will be no different. Lets make a difference together!” – Viv and Alan (Owners).

Dive Against Debris / Adopt a Dive Site

Dive Against Debris flagship citizen-science program that empowers scuba divers to remove marine debris from the ocean and report data on the types, quantities and locations of materials collected. As the only underwater debris data collection program of its kind, Dive Against Debris both improves the health of ocean ecosystems through localized volunteer efforts and provides valuable information about underwater debris to help inform policy change. The Idea of Dive Against Debris is to remove rubbish from the sea which we, as a Dive Centre we’ve always done. The rubbish which is collected is then sorted so information can be uploaded to Project Aware. The information gathered is then processed and used to evaluate the biggest worries of the debris collected. This in turn helps us to lobby governments so that changes can be made. There is a slate to record all the rubbish collected and information booklets on how to segregate the rubbish; what to remove and what not to remove.

As part of our commitment to Project AWARE’s flagship citizen-science program, DIVEWISE carries out monthly Dive Against Debris surveys, reporting types and quantities of marine debris found underwater each month from our adopted dive site: DIVEWISE HOUSE REEF. We adopted the reef outside our dive centre, due to the closeness of Mercanti Reef, often gets rubbish trapped inside when the waves and wind come from the east. Our repeated marine debris surveys help improve the health of local ocean ecosystems. More importantly, the data we submit to Project AWARE provides much-needed information about marine debris to help drive policy change. Together, DIVEWISE and other Adopt a Dive Site participants around the world build a strong and vibrant community of Dive Against Debris activists. Help us ignite a new wave of stewardship – join us!

To adopt a dive site, it is definitely good to have Dive Against Debris experience. Our very own Howard Shaw became Dive Against Debris Instructor in Dec 2015. Which in turn paved the way for us to adopt the location around our house reef.

To kickstart the Dive Against Debris process, we organised a clean up on the 8th of  December as part of Project Aware week and uploaded the information on what we collected. We also made 7 people into Dive Against Debris divers and Sarah and Prescillia into Dive Against Debris instructors. Hopefully other instructors will follow as part of our staff development programme.

You can now do a Dive Against Debris dive as part of the Advanced Open Water Course, if you, as a student, are keen on environmental issues, this is something you definitely should look into with us! The instructors for this dive must be a Dive Against Debris Instructor, so having Sarah and Prescillia become instructors was a great choice overall, for both the centre and our students.

This is really important as we are now a PADI 100% Project AWARE Dive Centre, so we will be supporting Project Aware by having adopted our dive site and encouraging divers to contribute to this charity by donating to Project Aware and receiving a PADI Aware card for all their certifications.

What we are doing at the centre to support this movement

We've already become a 100% Project Aware Partner, adopted a dive site, organized clean ups, set up recycling bins at our centre and now....We are going to eliminate plastic bottles as much as we can with your help and in return, give you something to remember your time with us and reuse it wherever possible. Behold - our new reusable water flasks available for €5.00 each. We've also set up water dispensers inside the centre for you to refill your awesome flask up to 10 times for FREE!
